Australia Student Visa from Pakistan: Subclass 500 Guide

An Australia student visa from Pakistan is the Student visa (subclass 500). You need a Confirmation of Enrolment for a CRICOS-registered course, Overseas Student Health Cover, an English result from an approved test taken at a centre, evidence of funds and specific answers to the Genuine Student questions, all lodged online through ImmiAccount.

Key points

  • Your application is only valid with a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for every course you plan to study.
  • The Genuine Student questions replaced the old GTE statement; answer them yourself, specifically, and back each answer with documents.
  • Take your English test in person at a test centre, because fully online at-home tests are not accepted for Australian visas.
  • For applications from 2 October 2026, most students must apply from outside Australia and cannot bring family unless they meet an exemption.
  • Carry an official polio vaccination certificate, as Pakistan is considered at risk of polio.

An Australia student visa from Pakistan means the Student visa (subclass 500), which lets you study full-time in a course registered on CRICOS, the government's register of courses for overseas students. You apply online through ImmiAccount with a Confirmation of Enrolment, health cover, an English result, financial evidence and written answers to the Genuine Student questions. The current visa charge and processing time, with their official source, are on our Australia student visa guide.

The rules changed again for applications lodged from 2 October 2026: most students must now apply from outside Australia and cannot include family members unless they meet an exemption. If you want a second opinion on your plan, VisaWala's study visa service starts with a free assessment.

What is the Australia student visa (subclass 500)?

Subclass 500 is the one visa Australia uses for international students, whether you are heading to a university, a TAFE or a private college. It is issued by the Department of Home Affairs and normally covers the length of your course plus a short period afterwards.

It is not the right visa for short study of up to three months, which can be done on a Visitor visa (subclass 600), or for occupational training, which may suit the Training visa (subclass 407). If you are still weighing Australia against other countries, our study abroad guide for Pakistani students compares the main destinations, and our student visa guides cover each in turn.

1. Accept your offer and get your CoE

Your education provider issues the Confirmation of Enrolment once you accept its offer and meet its conditions, which usually means paying a tuition deposit. Without a CoE, your visa application is not valid.

Before you accept, check that the course is CRICOS-registered and that it fits your past studies. A BBA graduate from Lahore applying for a diploma in an unrelated field, for example, will need a convincing reason. Some providers run their own genuine student checks before issuing a CoE, so treat any admissions interview seriously. If your provider asks for verified documents, VisaWala can arrange HEC and IBCC attestation through the official offices.

2. Sit an English test that counts for the visa

Unless you are exempt, you must show results from a test approved for Australian visas, taken in person at a test centre. Results from fully online or at-home versions are not accepted, even if your university is happy with them.

Check two separate requirements: the score your provider asks for and the visa's own minimum for your type of course. The safest plan is a single in-person test that clears both. Our comparison of IELTS, PTE and Duolingo explains which tests work for Australia.

3. Buy OSHC that starts when you arrive

Overseas Student Health Cover is compulsory for subclass 500 holders and must last for your whole stay. Buy it from an approved Australian insurer, either through your provider or directly.

The usual mistake is matching the policy to the course start date. Cover must begin from the day you plan to arrive, and you should not enter Australia before it starts. If you are one of the students still allowed to bring family, they must be on the policy too.

4. Answer the Genuine Student questions

The Genuine Student requirement replaced the old GTE statement. Instead of one long essay, the online form asks set questions, to be answered in English within a word limit, and the officer reads your answers alongside your documents to decide whether study is your real purpose.

What the questions cover

The exact wording can change, but the questions broadly ask about:

  • Your current circumstances: family, community, work and financial ties in Pakistan
  • Why you chose this course and this provider, and what you know about them
  • How the course fits your previous study and your career plans
  • Anything else relevant, such as a gap in your studies or an earlier visa refusal

How to write strong answers

Be specific and personal. Name the course, the provider, the city and the units that matter to you, and explain how they build on your degree or work. Mention concrete plans, such as the type of role or employer you are aiming for back in Pakistan.

Back every claim with a document: experience letters for work, an FRC for family ties, business records for a family firm and evidence for any gap. Our guide to writing a statement of purpose helps you organise your reasoning before you cut it down to the word limit.

5. Prepare evidence of funds

You must show that you can pay for travel, first-year tuition and living costs, or that your parents or partner earned enough in the year before you apply. The Department sets these amounts and updates them, so check the current figures before you prepare your file, and use its document checklist tool to confirm what to attach.

There are two main ways to do it:

  • Savings, deposits, loans or scholarships: statements and letters showing the money and, crucially, where it came from, such as salary, business income, a property sale or agricultural income backed by records
  • Annual income: official government documents, such as tax assessments, showing your parents' or partner's income in the year before you apply; bank statements and employer letters are not accepted for this option

For Pakistani families, FBR tax returns and an NTN make the income route possible, but only if the returns are genuine and fit the savings described elsewhere in your file. Our article on proof of funds for a student visa covers sponsors, gifts and the deposits officers question.

6. Lodge in ImmiAccount, then give biometrics and do health checks

Create an ImmiAccount, complete the subclass 500 form, attach your documents and pay the visa application charge. The Department's Student visa (subclass 500) page holds the official requirements, and the current charge is also on our subclass 500 guide.

After lodging, you may be asked to give biometrics and attend health examinations with an approved panel clinic. These requests carry deadlines, so book promptly. Keep your CoE valid until the decision: if your provider cancels it, your application can fail.

7. Get your decision and plan your arrival

You are told the outcome in writing. Read the grant notice for your conditions, including work limits and the requirements to keep studying and keep your health cover. Processing times move regularly, so check the Department's global visa processing times before you book anything non-refundable.

Plan to land after your OSHC starts and in time for orientation. VisaWala can arrange airport pick-up to your student accommodation and help with flights once the visa is granted.

Why are Australian student visas refused?

Refusals of subclass 500 applications from Pakistan tend to follow the same patterns:

  • Genuine Student answers that are generic, copied or not backed by documents
  • Funds with no clear source, or large deposits made shortly before lodging
  • A course that does not fit your previous study or career, with no explanation
  • English results from at-home or online tests the Department does not accept
  • Previous refusals or visa cancellations that are not declared or addressed
  • No CoE at lodgement, or a CoE cancelled before the decision

Every one of these is avoidable. If you have already been refused, our guide to student visa refusal reasons explains how to respond. For local help, compare Australia student visa consultants in Lahore or in Islamabad.

Frequently asked questions

Can my parents' income be used instead of savings?

Yes. Instead of showing a lump sum, you can show that your parents, or your partner, earned at least the required annual income in the year before you apply. The evidence must be official government documents, such as tax assessments; bank statements and employer letters do not count for this option. For many Pakistani families, genuine FBR returns are the key document.

Can I take my spouse or children to Australia on a student visa?

For applications lodged from 2 October 2026, most students cannot include family members, and family cannot join later either. Exemptions cover groups such as doctoral students, students sponsored by Australia's foreign affairs or defence departments and holders of fully funded foreign government scholarships. Check the Department's current rules before you build plans around family.

How many hours can I work on a subclass 500 visa?

Student visa holders can work a limited number of hours per fortnight while their course is in session, and without that limit during scheduled breaks. Master's by research and doctoral students have no limit. The cap has changed in recent years, so check the current figure on the Department's website rather than relying on what friends were told.

Can I apply for a subclass 500 visa from inside Australia?

For most people, no longer. From 2 October 2026, most Student visa applications must be lodged outside Australia, and only people who hold an eligible visa and meet an exemption can apply onshore. If you are visiting Australia, do not plan to switch to study there; apply from Pakistan with a complete file instead.

What is CRICOS and why does it matter?

CRICOS is the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students. Only courses on this register can be studied on a subclass 500 visa, so check the course code before you accept an offer. A course that is not CRICOS-registered cannot produce a valid CoE, however attractive the fee or the agent's promises.

Do I need a medical exam for an Australian student visa?

You may be asked to attend health examinations with an approved panel clinic after you lodge, depending on your circumstances. The Department tells you through ImmiAccount if you need them, and you should respond within the deadline in the request. Separately, carry an official polio vaccination certificate, as Pakistan is considered at risk of polio.

Note: This guide is general information, not legal or immigration advice. Visa rules change and every case is different. Always confirm current requirements and speak to a qualified consultant before applying.
