Bank Statement for Visit Visa: What Embassies Look For

There is no single bank balance that wins a visit visa. Your bank statement for a visit visa has to show enough money for the trip, a steady pattern of income, and savings that match your job, tax returns and lifestyle. Large deposits made just before applying, with no explanation, are a frequent reason for refusal.

Key points

  • No embassy rewards a big balance on its own; officers judge whether your money fits your income, your job and the cost of the trip.
  • A steady history of salary or business income, in an account in your own name, counts for more than a sudden lump sum.
  • Every large deposit needs a paper trail, such as a sale deed, a bonus letter or a remittance record.
  • Your statement, salary slips, FBR tax returns and visa form must all tell the same story.
  • Borrowed or ‘parked’ money and edited statements can turn a simple refusal into a ban.

What is a bank statement for a visit visa meant to prove?

A bank statement for visit visa purposes is not a test of how rich you are. It answers two questions the officer has to settle: can you pay for this trip without working illegally, and does your financial life in Pakistan look settled enough that you will come home? When VisaWala's visit visa service reviews a file, the statement is read with exactly those two questions in mind.

That is why a modest account with years of regular salary credits often reads better than a large balance that appeared last month. This guide explains what officers look at, line by line, and how to present your money honestly. For the full document list each country asks for, see our visit visa guides by destination.

How much bank balance do you need for a visit visa?

There is no single figure that works for every embassy, and anyone who quotes one number for all countries is guessing. The UK, Canada, Australia and the US do not set a fixed minimum balance for ordinary visitors. Their officers ask whether your funds are enough for the trip you describe and whether they make sense for someone with your income.

A few countries do set a reference amount. Some Schengen states publish a sum per day of stay, and where one applies, that embassy's checklist or website says so. Our Schengen visit visa guide explains how to find the right embassy and its checklist.

To work out a sensible level of funds for your own trip, add up:

  • Flights, accommodation and daily costs for the length of stay on your form
  • What your host is covering, if they are paying for part of it
  • Money that must stay behind for your family, rent and bills while you are away
  • Your normal monthly income and spending, which the statement already shows

If paying for the trip would empty your account, an officer may doubt that the trip is affordable or that you plan to return. Being able to pay comfortably, and still have savings left over, reads far better than a balance that barely covers the trip.

What do visa officers look for in your bank statement?

Officers read a statement as a story about your life. These are the things they check, roughly in the order they notice them.

Regular income

Salary credited on about the same date each month, rent from a property, or business receipts that arrive steadily all show a real source of money. If your salary goes into a different account from the one you are submitting, include that account too, or explain why.

The source of large deposits

Any credit much larger than your usual income will be questioned. If it came from selling land, a car or gold, from a bonus, or from a relative, the paper trail should be in your file before the officer has to ask.

Consistency with your job and tax returns

Your employer letter states a salary, your salary slips state a salary, and your statement shows what actually arrives. If these three do not match, or your FBR return declares far less income than your account receives, the officer sees a gap that needs explaining.

Account age and everyday spending

A newly opened account tells the officer very little. An older account in your own name, with ordinary payments for bills, school fees and groceries, shows a life rooted in Pakistan. A balance that never moves, or money that leaves the day after it arrives, attracts attention.

Bank statement or bank maintenance certificate: what is the difference?

A bank statement lists every transaction over a period: credits, debits and the running balance. A bank maintenance certificate, sometimes called an account maintenance letter, is a one-page letter from your branch confirming that you hold the account, when it was opened and what it currently holds.

Many checklists, such as Türkiye's, ask for both. The certificate confirms the account is real and in your name, while the statement shows how the money behaves over time. A certificate on its own, with no statement behind it, rarely satisfies an officer.

How to get a bank statement that embassies accept

Pakistani banks issue statements in several formats, and embassies differ in what they accept. Follow these steps unless your destination's checklist says otherwise.

  1. Read the checklist for your destination and note the period it asks for. Our Canada visit visa guide, for example, asks for statements covering several recent months. Request that period in full, without trimming the older months.
  2. Ask your branch for the statement, or download it from online banking if the embassy accepts e-statements.
  3. Have the branch stamp and sign it where the checklist asks, so it can be verified if the embassy contacts the bank.
  4. Get a bank maintenance certificate on the bank's letterhead, dated close to your application.
  5. Check that the account name matches your passport exactly and that the account number is the same on every page.
  6. Add a short cover note explaining anything unusual, such as a large credit or a period with no salary.

Issue the statement as close to your submission date as the checklist allows. A statement that stops well before you apply leaves a blank period that officers may ask about.

Good signs vs red flags in a visit visa bank statement

What the officer seesGood signRed flag
IncomeSalary or business income arriving regularlyNo regular credits, only occasional cash deposits
Large depositsExplained with documents, such as a sale deed or bonus letterA lump sum shortly before applying, with no explanation
Balance over timeBuilds gradually and moves with normal spendingFlat for months, then jumps just before the application
Match with other papersAgrees with salary slips, the employer letter and tax returnsIncome far above what the tax return or employer letter declares
Account holderIn your own name, or a sponsor's with their documentsA friend's or agent's account, or money you cannot explain
FormatStamped or verifiable, with consistent account detailsEdited entries, missing pages or mismatched account numbers

One red flag does not automatically mean refusal, but each one needs a clear answer in your file. Several together make refusal far more likely.

How to explain unexplained deposits

Money moves in Pakistani families in ways officers do not always expect: a committee payout, wedding gifts, help from a brother in Riyadh, the sale of a plot. None of that is a problem if you can show where the money came from.

  • Property or land sale: the sale deed or transfer papers, and the buyer's payment showing in your account
  • Committee (rotating savings) payout: a signed note from the organiser and the record of your regular contributions
  • Bonus or arrears: a letter from your employer confirming the payment
  • Remittance from family abroad: the transfer records and a short letter from the sender
  • Sale of a car or gold: the sale agreement or receipt
  • Agricultural income: land records such as the fard, and evidence of crop sales

Explain these in a brief cover letter, in plain words, and attach the evidence. Our UK visit visa guide makes the same point about irregular income from farming or a family business, and the approach works for other embassies too.

Using a sponsor bank statement

A sponsor is the person paying for your trip. It can be a parent or spouse in Pakistan, or the son, daughter or friend you are visiting abroad. A sponsor bank statement shows they have the means, but it has to come with the rest of their story.

If your sponsor is in Pakistan

Include a signed sponsorship letter, the sponsor's bank statements and income evidence, and proof of how you are related, usually the NADRA Family Registration Certificate. A homemaker travelling on her husband's funds, or a student on a parent's, is an ordinary case; it simply needs the sponsor's papers.

If your sponsor lives abroad

Your host should send a signed letter saying what they will cover, their bank statements and payslips or business records, and proof of their status in that country. Our guide to the invitation letter for a visit visa explains how the letter and the sponsor's documents fit together.

Joint accounts, business accounts and salary accounts

A joint account with a spouse or parent is fine, but say who the other holder is and add their consent or sponsorship letter if their money is paying for the trip.

Business owners should show both the business account and a personal account, backed by registration papers, an NTN and tax returns. Do not present business turnover as personal savings; officers know the difference between money passing through a shop and money that belongs to you.

For salaried applicants, a salary account showing each month's pay arriving, with matching salary slips and an employer letter, is the cleanest evidence there is.

Why FBR tax returns matter for a visa from Pakistan

Tax returns do two jobs in a visa file. They confirm your declared income, and they show the officer that your money is part of the formal economy. Self-employed applicants and business owners are routinely asked for them, and they strengthen a salaried applicant's file too.

The returns must make sense next to your statement. If your account receives far more than your return declares, the officer may doubt both documents. If you are a filer with an NTN, include your recent returns and wealth statement. If you are not, speak to a tax adviser well before your trip rather than filing in a rush just before you apply.

Never borrow, park or fake funds

Borrowing money from a relative, keeping it in your account for the application and returning it afterwards is called parking funds. Officers see it constantly: the money appears just before the application, sits untouched and then leaves, and the statement gives it away.

A fake or edited statement is far worse. Embassies can check with banks, and false documents can lead to a ban on future applications, not just a refusal. If an agent offers to “arrange” a statement, walk away; our guide to avoiding visa fraud and fake consultants explains the other warning signs.

If a weak statement has already cost you a visa, read our guide on what to do after a visit visa refusal before you apply again.

Get your bank statement reviewed before you apply

A short review before submission can catch the deposit you forgot to explain or the salary slip that does not match. Share your statement and trip plans with VisaWala's visit visa consultants for a free first assessment, or send them through our contact form. Students face a stricter version of the same questions, often with set amounts to show. Our separate guide to proof of funds for a student visa covers that side.

Frequently asked questions

How many months of bank statements do I need for a visit visa?

It depends on the country. Each embassy's checklist states the period it wants, and many ask for the last several months of transactions, while self-employed applicants benefit from a longer history. Give the full period asked for, with no gaps, running up to a date close to your application. If the checklist is silent, a longer history is safer than a shorter one.

Can I use my father's bank statement for my visit visa?

Yes, if your father is paying for the trip. Treat him as your sponsor: include his signed letter saying what he will cover, his bank statements and income evidence, and the NADRA Family Registration Certificate showing your relationship. Your own documents still matter, so add your job, studies or other ties to Pakistan, and make sure the visa form names him as the person paying.

Can I deposit money to increase my balance before applying?

You can move your own money between your own accounts, but a sudden jump with no explanation is one of the clearest red flags an officer sees. If the money is genuinely yours, for example from selling a plot, keep it with its paper trail and explain it. If it is borrowed just to make the balance look bigger, do not do it.

Do e-statements from online banking work for a visa?

Some embassies accept them and others want statements stamped by the branch, so check your destination's checklist. If you are unsure, ask your branch for a stamped copy or a verification letter as well. An officer who cannot verify a plain printout may give it less weight, and the stamp costs you very little effort.

Do property papers or a credit card count as funds?

Property papers help show your ties to Pakistan and your overall standing, but officers look mainly at money you can actually spend on the trip. A credit card is useful while travelling, yet its limit is not your savings. Lead with your bank statements, and add property documents and card statements as supporting evidence rather than as a replacement.

Do I need a bank statement for a Dubai or Saudi visit visa?

Gulf visit visas work differently. For the UAE and for Saudi family visits, a sponsor in the country applies, and the checklist focuses on the sponsor's status, income and your relationship rather than on your own statement. You should still be able to fund your stay. Our guide to the Dubai visit visa from Pakistan explains that route.
