Study in Europe from Pakistan: Countries, Costs to Plan For and Visas

To study in Europe from Pakistan, you secure admission first, then apply for the national long-stay (type D) student visa of the country where you will study, not a Schengen visa. Most embassies want an admission letter, proof of funds such as Germany's blocked account, health insurance, accommodation and attested documents, and you register for a residence permit after arrival.

Key points

  • Degree students need the national long-stay (type D) visa of their study country; a Schengen short-stay visa does not cover a full programme.
  • Low or no tuition at public universities does not remove the need to prove you can pay your living costs.
  • Germany usually asks for a blocked account, a formal obligation letter or an official scholarship, while Italy requires pre-enrolment on Universitaly before a visa appointment.
  • Sign your passport and book only through the embassy's official channels; missions in Pakistan say they never charge for appointments or contact applicants on WhatsApp.
  • A type D visa only gets you in: you must apply for a residence permit for study soon after you arrive.

To study in Europe from Pakistan, you apply to a university first and then for the national long-stay (type D) student visa of the country where you will study. There is no single European student visa: Germany, Italy, France and the rest each run their own process, fund rules and appointment system. Our Europe student visa guide lists the official visa fees for Germany and Italy with their sources, and this article helps you choose a country and plan the whole route.

Europe attracts Pakistani students because many public universities charge low or no tuition and a growing number of programmes are taught in English. The trade-off is paperwork, which is heavier and more country-specific than for the UK or Canada. VisaWala's student visa service offers a free first assessment if you want help deciding where to apply.

Can you study in Europe from Pakistan on a Schengen visa?

Not for a degree. A Schengen visa (type C) is a short-stay visa for tourism, business or family visits, and it only covers short courses that fit within the Schengen short-stay limit. A national D visa is issued by one country for a longer stay with a set purpose, such as study.

While your type D visa or residence permit is valid, you can usually make short trips to other Schengen countries, but you live and study in the country that issued it. If you are planning a short visit rather than a degree, our Schengen visa guide covers that route instead.

Best European countries for Pakistani students compared

The countries below are the ones Pakistani students ask about most when looking for low-tuition universities in Europe. The table compares them in broad terms only; tuition, fund levels and accepted evidence change, so check each embassy and university for the current rules. Our study abroad guide compares Europe with the UK, Canada, Australia and the US.

ItalyA growing number of English-taught programmesCharged, often linked to family incomeYour own or your parents' bank statements, or an Italian government scholarship
FranceMostly French, with some English-taught programmesCharged; check the university, as private schools usually cost moreAs set out on the French embassy's current list
NetherlandsMany English-taught programmesCharged, usually at a higher rate for non-EU studentsThe university, as your sponsor, usually checks funds; confirm with it

Our Europe guide covers Germany and Italy in detail; for France, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Hungary, follow the embassy's own instructions. Whichever country you choose, check that the university is recognised and, for regulated fields such as medicine, that the relevant council in Pakistan will accept the degree when you come home.

Study in Germany from Pakistan: blocked account and portal

Germany is one of the most popular choices for low-tuition study, and its process is well documented. Most students show funds through a blocked account: an account in Germany into which you pay a year's living costs in advance, and from which you can withdraw only a fixed monthly amount after arrival. The German government sets the required total and changes it, so check the current rule on the German Missions in Pakistan visa page before you transfer anything.

Two details catch Pakistani applicants out. Your signature on the blocked account opening documents must be attested at the German Embassy in Islamabad, the Consulate General in Karachi or the Honorary Consul in Lahore. And a scholarship from a Pakistani university does not count as proof of funds, although official scholarships, including HEC awards, do.

Student visa applications go through Germany's online Consular Services Portal, with Karachi covering Sindh and Balochistan and Islamabad covering the rest of Pakistan. Germany no longer offers the informal remonstration procedure after a refusal, so your first application needs to be complete.

Study in Italy from Pakistan: Universitaly and appointments

Italy has become a popular alternative, with English-taught programmes and fees at many public universities linked to family income. The key difference is pre-enrolment: you apply to the university and register on the Universitaly portal, and only applications the university has validated move on to a visa appointment.

The Italian Embassy in Islamabad assigns appointments in order of the university's validation date, so applying early to your programme also moves you up the visa queue. Funds are usually shown through your own or your parents' bank statements covering the required period, or an Italian government scholarship. After arrival you must start your residence permit application within days, so plan your first week carefully.

What costs should you plan for?

Even where tuition is low, studying in Europe brings costs you need to budget for and, in most countries, prove before the visa is issued. The visa fees for Germany and Italy, with their official sources, are on our type D student visa guide; the rest vary by country, city and university.

  • Tuition or semester contributions, from almost nothing at some public universities to substantial fees at private institutions
  • Living costs, shown upfront through a blocked account, bank statements or a scholarship
  • Health insurance that meets the host country's rules for students
  • The national visa fee, paid in the way the embassy specifies
  • HEC, IBCC and MOFA attestation, certified translations and recognition of your qualifications
  • Language certificates for English or the local language
  • Residence permit fees after arrival, plus a deposit for your first accommodation
  • Flights, and travel within Pakistan to the embassy or appointment centre

Our guide to proof of funds for a student visa explains how to show a sponsor's money in a way embassies accept.

1. Shortlist programmes you are eligible for

European universities check eligibility strictly. Many master's programmes expect a bachelor's comparable to a full European degree, so graduates of Pakistan's older, shorter BA or BSc programmes should check carefully before applying. Bachelor's applicants need HSSC or A level results that meet the university's entry rules, and some countries ask for a foundation or preparatory year first.

Check the language requirement too: an English certificate for English-taught programmes, or the local language for others. Some universities accept an English-medium letter from your Pakistani institution instead of a test; many do not. Our comparison of IELTS, PTE and Duolingo helps you pick the right test.

2. Apply and secure admission

Apply directly to each university, or through the national portal where one exists, and follow its deadlines, which are often earlier for non-EU applicants. Most ask for a CV and a motivation letter as well as transcripts.

Your motivation letter matters twice: for admission, and again if the embassy asks why you chose the programme. Explain how it builds on your studies and what you plan to do afterwards. Our guide to writing a statement of purpose applies just as well to a European motivation letter.

3. Verify, attest and translate your documents

European embassies are strict about document authenticity. Expect to have your degree verified by HEC, your school certificates verified by IBCC, and MOFA attestation or an apostille where the embassy asks for it. Some countries also want certified translations into the local language.

Start as soon as you have an offer, and keep several attested copies, because the university, the embassy and the immigration office after arrival may each want one. VisaWala can arrange HEC, IBCC and MOFA attestation and translations through official channels.

4. Arrange proof of funds and health insurance

Each country sets its own amount and accepted forms of proof, as the table above shows. Whatever form you use, the money should have a clear source: salary slips, FBR tax returns and NTN, business records or property documents for a parent sponsor, plus proof of the relationship such as a NADRA Family Registration Certificate.

You also need health insurance that meets the host country's rules for students, at least from your arrival until any local cover begins. VisaWala can help you find student health cover that meets visa rules; keep the full policy wording ready for the embassy.

5. Book through the official channel and submit

Sign your passport before you apply, because embassies may refuse to place a visa in an unsigned Pakistani passport. Then book your appointment only through the embassy's own website or its official portal.

Missions in Pakistan warn that they do not charge for appointments and do not contact applicants on WhatsApp, so anyone selling a ‘confirmed slot’ is running a scam. Our guide to spotting visa fraud and fake consultants lists the other warning signs. On the day, bring originals and clear copies in the order the embassy lists, because incomplete files are delayed.

6. Arrive and apply for your residence permit

Your type D visa lets you enter and start your course, but it will not carry you through a whole degree. Soon after arrival, register your address where the country requires it and apply for a residence permit for study at the local immigration office. In some countries, such as Italy, this must start within days.

Book your first accommodation before you fly, because a registered address is often needed for the permit. VisaWala can arrange short-stay rooms for students arriving early while you look for a longer let.

Frequently asked questions

Is studying in Germany free for Pakistani students?

Tuition at most public universities in Germany is low or free, but not everything is. You usually pay a semester contribution, some states or universities may charge non-EU students tuition, and you must prove you can cover living costs, normally through a blocked account. Private universities charge full fees. Check the university's own page and the German missions' current requirements before you decide.

Do I need IELTS to study in Europe?

For English-taught programmes, most universities ask for IELTS, TOEFL or a similar certificate, though some accept an English-medium letter from your Pakistani university. For programmes in German, Italian or French you need a certificate in that language at the required level. The embassy may check your language level too, so make sure your proof matches the programme.

Can I work while studying in Europe?

Yes, within limits set by each country. EU rules on students allow work alongside your studies, but hours are capped and the conditions differ from one country to the next. After graduating, most EU countries let you stay for a period to look for a job. Never count on part-time work to meet the funds requirement for your visa.

Can I bring my family on a European student visa?

Some countries allow students to bring a spouse and children through family reunification, but conditions differ widely and usually include extra funds, housing and health insurance for each family member. Others make it difficult at bachelor's or master's level. Check the embassy page for your study country for the current rules before you make plans.

Is a type D visa enough for my whole degree?

No. The type D visa lets you enter and start your studies, but you then need a residence permit for study from the immigration authority of that country. Permits are usually issued for a limited period and renewed while you stay enrolled and keep meeting the conditions, such as funds and health insurance.

What happens if Germany refuses my student visa?

Germany no longer offers the informal remonstration procedure, so you cannot simply ask the mission to reconsider. Your options are a new application that fixes the problems named in the refusal notice, or the formal legal remedy the notice describes. Read the reasons carefully, strengthen the weak points and apply again only when your file is complete.

Note: This guide is general information, not legal or immigration advice. Visa rules change and every case is different. Always confirm current requirements and speak to a qualified consultant before applying.
