For a Schengen visa from Pakistan, apply to the consulate of the country where you will spend the most nights, or the country you enter first if your time is split equally. Book through the provider that embassy names, buy compliant travel medical insurance, give fingerprints in person and keep every booking consistent with your itinerary.

Key points

  • Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights; if your nights are split equally, apply to the country you enter first.
  • Most embassies in Pakistan take applications through an external service provider, so book only through the one named on the embassy's own website.
  • Travel medical insurance is compulsory and must cover every day of the trip, every Schengen country and at least the minimum the rules set.
  • Your form, itinerary, hotel and flight reservations, insurance and leave letter must all show the same dates.
  • A refusal comes on a standard form with the reasons ticked and the appeal route for that country explained.

A Schengen visa from Pakistan is a short-stay visa (type C) for tourism or family visits across the Schengen area, and the most important decision is which country you apply to. You apply to the consulate of your main destination, book through the service provider it names and give fingerprints in person. Our Schengen visit visa guide shows the current fee and processing time, with the official source.

This article focuses on the decisions people get wrong: the embassy, the appointment, the insurance and an itinerary that holds together. For the full paperwork list, use our separate Schengen documents checklist. If you would like your plan checked first, VisaWala's visit visa service starts with a free review.

What is a Schengen visa?

A Schengen visa is a single short-stay visa that lets you move between the Schengen countries without separate visas or border checks between them. The standard type C visa allows stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole area, unless it is marked as valid only for certain countries.

It suits holidays, family visits and events such as weddings or graduations in Europe. It is not for joining a spouse, studying or working, which need a national long-stay (type D) visa from the country concerned. Ireland sits outside the Schengen area and issues its own visa. The European Commission sets out the common rules in its guide to applying for a Schengen visa.

Schengen visa from Pakistan: which country should you apply to?

The main destination rule decides where you apply. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If your time is split equally, apply to the country whose external border you will cross first, which is usually where your flight from Pakistan lands.

The EU rules also let the purpose of a trip make a country the main destination, for example when a family wedding in one country is the reason for the whole journey. If your plan sits on the line, ask the embassy before you book anything.

Why applying to the 'easier' embassy backfires

Some agents suggest applying wherever appointments are easier to get, then travelling mostly elsewhere. The visa may be issued, but your entries and exits are recorded, border officers can ask about your plans, and the mismatch can count against you in later applications. Apply where your itinerary genuinely points.

What to decide before booking a Schengen visa appointment

Most problems start before the appointment. Settle these points first, and the form, bookings and insurance will agree with each other.

Schengen travel insurance: what the policy must cover

Travel medical insurance is a formal requirement for a Schengen visa, not an optional extra. The policy must cover emergency medical care, hospital treatment and repatriation, be valid in every Schengen country, and run for every day of your trip. Its cover must be at least the minimum the Schengen rules set, which our Schengen documents checklist states.

Buy it from a licensed insurer and read the certificate before you print it. Common mistakes include:

  • Cover that ends the day before your return flight
  • A policy limited to one country when your route crosses several
  • A misspelt name or the wrong passport number
  • An undeclared medical condition that would void a claim

If you need a compliant policy, our travel insurance service checks the cover against the Schengen rules before it is issued.

1. Fix your itinerary and main destination

Write a day-by-day plan: cities, nights in each, how you move between them and where you sleep. Count the nights per country to confirm your main destination, then make genuine hotel and flight reservations that match it. Our hotel booking team can hold reservations with flexible terms while you wait for a decision.

What a good itinerary looks like

One line per day is enough: the date, the city, how you get there and where you sleep, such as a train from Rome to Florence and two nights at a named hotel. Hotel names and dates should match your reservations exactly, and the first and last days should match your flight reservation. If you stay with relatives for part of the trip, give their address for those nights and attach their invitation.

2. Read that embassy's checklist for Pakistan

Each Schengen embassy publishes its own document list for applicants in Pakistan, and they differ on details such as sponsor forms, apostilles and the order of papers. Follow yours exactly. Germany, for example, publishes its requirements on the German Missions in Pakistan visa page.

3. Book your Schengen visa appointment

Most embassies in Pakistan take applications through an external service provider. Book only through the provider named on the embassy's own website, and handle the booking yourself where you can.

Appointments can be scarce before the summer holidays. Be wary of anyone selling 'confirmed slots' for cash: paying a middleman does not make an appointment more official, and it is a common way to lose money.

4. Prepare the file and cover letter

Complete and sign the form, buy the insurance and arrange your documents in the order the checklist gives. Add a short cover letter covering the trip, your job or business, who is paying and when you return. Officers read statements closely, and our guide to the bank statement for a visit visa explains what they look for. Finally, check that the dates on your form, insurance, bookings and leave letter are identical.

5. Submit, give fingerprints and travel as planned

Attend in person to submit the file and give fingerprints, unless you are exempt. When the visa is issued, check its dates, number of entries and the countries it covers. Then travel broadly as planned. At the border your fingerprints and photo are recorded and your days are counted, and a first visa used honestly helps later applications.

What happens if your Schengen visa is refused?

A refusal comes on a standard form that ticks the reasons, such as an unjustified purpose, insufficient means, doubts about your intention to leave or inadequate insurance. It also explains how to appeal in that country and by when.

An appeal suits cases where strong evidence was clearly misread. Where the file itself was thin, a fresh application with better evidence is often the quicker route. Our guide on visit visa refusals and reapplying walks through both options.

Frequently asked questions

How early should I apply for a Schengen visa from Pakistan?

You can apply no earlier than six months before your trip. In practice, start as soon as your dates are firm, because appointment availability in Pakistan is often the real bottleneck, especially before summer. The current official processing time is on our Schengen visit visa guide; allow extra time for the appointment and passport return.

Can I enter through one Schengen country and apply to another?

Yes, if the other country is your main destination. Where you land only decides the embassy when your nights are split equally. If you fly into Paris but spend most nights in Italy, you apply to Italy. Keep your flight and hotel bookings consistent with that plan, and be ready to explain it at the border.

Do I need a confirmed flight ticket for a Schengen visa?

Most embassies accept a flight reservation rather than a paid ticket, and buying a non-refundable ticket before a decision is a risk. The reservation must be genuine and match your itinerary. Online 'dummy tickets' whose booking reference an airline cannot find damage your credibility, so use a real reservation from an airline or a flight booking service.

Does a previous UK or US visa help a Schengen application?

It can. Well-used visas from countries such as the UK, the US or Canada show that you have travelled and returned on time, which speaks to your intention to leave. They do not replace the core requirements, though. Your funds, ties, insurance and itinerary still have to stand on their own.

Can my relative in Europe sponsor my Schengen visa?

Yes. A relative or friend living in a Schengen country can invite you and cover some or all of your costs. Some countries ask the host to make a formal declaration with the local authorities rather than write a simple letter. Add a copy of their passport or residence permit, and proof of your relationship such as your NADRA Family Registration Certificate.

Can I visit the UK on a Schengen visa?

No. The UK is not part of the Schengen area and needs its own visit visa, and the same is true of Ireland. A Schengen visa covers the Schengen countries only, so if your trip includes London or Dublin, plan a separate application and allow for both sets of documents and appointments.

Note: This guide is general information, not legal or immigration advice. Visa rules change and every case is different. Always confirm current requirements and speak to a qualified consultant before applying.
