To get a Canada study permit from Pakistan, you need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI), in most cases a provincial or territorial attestation letter, traceable proof of funds and an immigration medical exam. You apply online through an IRCC account, give biometrics in Pakistan, and a border officer issues the permit when you land.
Key points
- You need a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution and, unless you are exempt, a provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL).
- Master's and doctoral students at public DLIs have not needed a PAL/TAL since January 2026, but most other students still do.
- Officers look closely at where your money came from, so one main source with a clear history works better than several small accounts.
- Applicants from Pakistan staying more than six months need an immigration medical exam; doing it before you apply keeps the file complete.
- Canada caps new study permits each year, so apply early and make your study plan specific to you.
A Canada study permit from Pakistan is the document that lets you study at a Canadian college or university for longer than six months. You apply online with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) before you travel, using a letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution, proof of funds and a clear study plan. Our Canada study permit guide lists the current official fee and processing time; this article explains each requirement and the order to tackle them in.
Canada now limits how many new study permits it issues, so a rushed or patchy file is riskier than it used to be. If you want your documents reviewed before you submit, VisaWala's student visa team offers a free first assessment.
What is a Canada study permit, and is it a visa?
A study permit is the immigration document that allows you to study in Canada. It sets your conditions, such as whether you can work and where you must study. It is not a travel visa: when IRCC approves you, you receive a port of entry letter of introduction and a visa in your passport, and the border officer issues the actual permit when you arrive. Most people searching for a Canada student visa from Pakistan mean this permit plus the visa that comes with it.
Courses of six months or less can usually be taken without a study permit, on a visitor visa. For a diploma, degree or postgraduate programme you need the permit, applied for from outside Canada through the regular process. If you are still choosing between countries, our guide to studying abroad from Pakistan compares the main destinations, and our student visa guides cover each one.
Canada study permit documents checklist
Gather these before you open your IRCC application, and scan each one clearly in colour. Anything not in English or French needs a certified translation.
| Document | Where it comes from | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Passport | Directorate General of Immigration and Passports | Ideally valid for your whole programme, with copies of the main pages |
| Letter of acceptance | Your designated learning institution | Name, date of birth and programme dates match your passport |
| PAL/TAL | Your province or territory, usually requested by the school | Needed unless you are exempt, such as a master's student at a public DLI |
| Academic documents | Your board, your university, HEC and IBCC | Degrees, transcripts and HSSC or A level results, verified where asked |
| Language test results | IELTS, PTE, TOEFL or another test your school accepted | The same result you used for admission |
| Letter of explanation | You | Your own words on why this course, why Canada and what you will do after |
| Proof of funds | Your bank, your sponsor's bank, a GIC provider or your school | Shows the source of the money, not just the balance |
| Sponsor documents | Your parents or other sponsor | Proof of relationship such as an FRC, plus tax returns, salary slips or business records |
| Medical exam | An IRCC panel physician in Pakistan | Done before you apply, so the file is complete |
| Police certificate | Police in Pakistan | Only if the visa office asks for one |
If your school wants verified or attested transcripts, VisaWala can arrange HEC and IBCC attestation through the official offices.
1. Get your letter of acceptance from a DLI
A designated learning institution (DLI) is a school approved by a provincial or territorial government to host international students. Colleges and universities must be on IRCC's DLI list, so confirm a school is there before you pay any application fee.
Post-secondary institutions now validate letters of acceptance with IRCC, which means an altered or fake letter is caught quickly. Accept your offer, pay any deposit the school asks for, and check that the letter shows your name exactly as your passport does. Most schools also want an English result; our comparison of IELTS, PTE and Duolingo helps you pick a test your school accepts.
2. Get your PAL/TAL, or confirm you are exempt
A provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL) confirms that you have a place within that province's share of Canada's study permit cap. Most undergraduate, diploma and college students need one, and the school usually requests it for you after you accept the offer and pay a deposit.
Under the rules in force since 1 January 2026, master's and doctoral students at public DLIs no longer need a PAL/TAL. Other exemptions exist and the details change, so confirm your position on the IRCC website before you apply. Provinces issue a limited number of letters each year, so ask your school about its timeline the day you accept.
3. Build proof of funds that shows its source
IRCC sets a cost-of-living figure each year and expects you to show it on top of your first year's tuition and your travel. Take the current amount from IRCC's own study permit pages rather than an old checklist, because it has been raised more than once in recent years.
The strongest proof of funds for a Canada student usually combines a few clear items rather than a pile of statements:
- Bank statements covering the past six months, showing salary, business income or savings building up over time
- A GIC from a Canadian financial institution, if you choose to use one
- A receipt for tuition already paid to your school, which reduces what you still need to show
- Your sponsor's papers: proof of the relationship (B-Form, FRC or birth certificate), FBR tax returns and NTN, salary slips or business records, and property documents if they explain where savings came from
- Any education loan or scholarship letter
Large deposits made shortly before applying, money borrowed from relatives for the statement and accounts with no visible income are the patterns officers question most. Our guide to proof of funds for a student visa explains how to present a sponsor's money cleanly.
4. Write a letter of explanation that connects the dots
The letter of explanation, often called a study plan, is your chance to answer the officer's questions before they are asked. Explain why this programme, why this school and why Canada rather than Pakistan or another country, and how the qualification fits the work you want to do when you return.
Pakistani applicants often weaken this letter by copying a template, choosing a course unrelated to their degree without saying why, or leaving a study gap unaddressed. Be specific: name the courses, the skills and the kind of employer or role you have in mind. Our step-by-step guide to writing a statement of purpose works for the Canadian letter too.
5. Do your immigration medical exam
As an applicant from Pakistan planning to stay more than six months, you need an immigration medical exam with an IRCC panel physician. Only doctors on IRCC's panel list can do it; reports from your family doctor or an ordinary hospital in Lahore or Karachi are not accepted.
Doing the exam before you apply, often called an upfront medical, means your file is complete on the day you submit and avoids a later request that slows everything down. Keep the information sheet the clinic gives you, because you upload it with your application.
6. Apply online and give biometrics in Pakistan
Create your IRCC account, complete the study permit application and upload each document where the form asks for it. Pay the study permit fee and the biometrics fee together; the current amounts, with their official source, are on our Canada student visa guide.
After you submit, IRCC sends a biometric instruction letter. Book an appointment at a visa application centre in Pakistan and give your fingerprints and photo before the deadline in that letter. Processing times for applications from Pakistan change week by week, so check the live figure on IRCC's processing times tool rather than relying on someone else's timeline.
7. Get your decision and prepare for arrival
If you are approved, IRCC asks for your passport so the visa can be placed in it, and sends a port of entry letter of introduction. Check both for errors before you fly. Carry the letter, your passport, your letter of acceptance, your proof of funds and your PAL/TAL in your hand luggage, because the border officer may want to see them before issuing your study permit.
Book flights that land before your programme starts, and arrange somewhere to stay for the first weeks. VisaWala can help with student flights and baggage options once your visa is in your passport. Health cover comes through a school plan or a provincial scheme depending on where you study, so confirm which applies to you before you leave.
Canada student visa from Pakistan: why applications are refused
Refusal letters usually point to one or more of these reasons. Each can be dealt with if you know about it before you apply.
- The officer is not satisfied you will leave Canada at the end of your studies, often because family, financial or job ties to Pakistan look thin on paper
- Funds that cannot be traced, or large recent deposits with no explanation
- A study plan that does not make sense given your past studies or work, such as a commerce graduate choosing an unrelated diploma
- A missing or invalid PAL/TAL, or a letter of acceptance that cannot be verified
- An incomplete medical exam, or documents the visa office asked for and never received
If you have been refused before, do not resubmit the same file. Our article on student visa refusal reasons explains how to read the letter and what to change. For local help, compare Canada student visa consultants in Lahore, in Karachi and in Islamabad.
Get your Canada file checked before you apply
A study permit application is judged on what you upload, with little chance to explain later. VisaWala reviews your letter of acceptance, PAL/TAL status, funds and study plan for free and tells you plainly what an officer is likely to question. If you want our help after that, the fee and the document list are confirmed in writing before you pay.
Share your offer and your sponsor's details through our study visa service page or on WhatsApp, and leave enough time before your intake to fix anything we find.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Student Direct Stream still open for Pakistani students?
No. The Student Direct Stream (SDS) closed in November 2024, so there is no longer a faster track for students from Pakistan. Everyone now applies through the regular study permit process, which means the quality of your documents, funds and study plan matters more than ever. Be wary of anyone still selling an ‘SDS file’ or a special route.
Do I need IELTS for a Canada study permit?
Your school decides which English or French tests it accepts for admission, and many DLIs take PTE, TOEFL or other evidence as well as IELTS. Include the result you used for admission with your application, because a solid language score supports the case that you can complete the programme. Check your school's current requirement before you book a test.
Is a GIC compulsory for Pakistani students?
No. A GIC from a participating Canadian financial institution is one accepted way to show living costs, and some students find it makes their funds easier to read. You can also use bank statements with a clear history, a tuition receipt, an education loan or a scholarship letter. What matters is that the officer can see the money exists and where it came from.
Can my spouse go with me to Canada?
Your spouse can apply to accompany you, but open work permits for spouses are now limited to partners of students in doctoral programmes, longer master's programmes and certain professional degrees. Other spouses would need a work permit of their own or a visitor visa. Bringing family also means showing more funds, so check the current rules before you plan.
Can I work while studying in Canada?
If the conditions on your study permit allow it, you can work off campus up to a weekly limit during academic terms and without that limit during scheduled breaks. The limit has changed in recent years, so check the current figure on IRCC's website. Work is meant to help with living costs, not to fund tuition, which you must show before you apply.
Can I stay in Canada after graduating?
Some graduates qualify for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP). Eligibility depends on your programme, your school and, for some college programmes, your field of study, so check before you choose a course rather than after. Canadian work experience can later count towards permanent residence, which our Express Entry guide for Pakistanis explains.
