IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo comes down to where you are going. IELTS and PTE Academic are mainly taken at test centres and are widely accepted by universities and visa authorities, while the Duolingo English Test is taken at home and accepted by many universities but not by every visa route. Check both your university's and the visa's rules first.
Key points
- Universities and visa authorities set separate English rules, and you must satisfy both.
- IELTS is the most widely recognised option, PTE Academic suits students who are comfortable on a computer, and Duolingo is the most convenient but the least widely accepted for visas.
- Australian student visas do not accept fully online at-home tests, and UK study below degree level normally needs a Secure English Language Test.
- Studying without IELTS is sometimes possible through a medium of instruction letter or a university's own assessment, but it depends on the course, the university and the visa.
- Book only through official test websites, as fake certificates are easily detected and can lead to a refusal for deception.
IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo is one of the first choices a Pakistani student makes, and the right answer depends less on which test feels easiest and more on what your university and your visa will accept. IELTS and PTE Academic are taken mainly at test centres and are recognised widely; the Duolingo English Test is taken at home and is popular with universities, but some visa routes do not accept it. Our student visa guides set out each country's English rule, and VisaWala's study visa service checks both the university and visa requirements for your exact course.
This guide compares the three tests, shows which ones each destination's visa accepts, explains when you can study abroad without IELTS and ends with practical booking and preparation advice.
What are IELTS, PTE and Duolingo?
IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) has four parts: listening, reading, writing and a face-to-face speaking test with an examiner. Students take IELTS Academic, and a separate version, IELTS for UKVI, is used where a UK visa needs a Secure English Language Test (SELT). In Pakistan you can sit it on paper or on computer.
PTE Academic, run by Pearson, is entirely computer-based. You speak into a microphone rather than to a person, and your answers are scored automatically. Pearson also offers a UKVI version for UK visas; as with IELTS for UKVI, check that it is on GOV.UK's current list of approved tests before you book.
The Duolingo English Test is a shorter online test that you take on your own computer at home, with a webcam and strict rules about your room. It adapts to your level as you go, and you share the results from your account with the institutions you choose.
IELTS vs PTE vs Duolingo: a side-by-side comparison
This comparison is qualitative and deliberately leaves out scores and fees, which change and differ by institution.
| Feature | IELTS Academic | PTE Academic | Duolingo English Test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you take it | Test centre, on paper or computer | Test centre, on computer | At home, on your own computer |
| Speaking test | Face to face with an examiner | Recorded into a microphone | Recorded responses to on-screen prompts |
| Scoring | Trained examiners mark speaking and writing | Automated scoring | Automated scoring, with the session reviewed for rule breaks |
| How results are sent | Through the test provider to the institutions you list | From your Pearson account to the institutions you choose | From your Duolingo account to the institutions you choose |
| University acceptance | Very wide | Wide and growing | Many universities, especially in the US and Canada, but not all |
| Visa use | Widely accepted; IELTS for UKVI where the UK needs a SELT | Widely accepted; PTE Academic UKVI where the UK needs a SELT | Not accepted on some routes, including Australia's student visa |
| Best for | Students who want the safest all-round choice | Confident typists comfortable with computer-based tests | Students whose university and visa both accept it |
Some providers also offer at-home versions of their tests, and these are not accepted for every purpose, including Australian student visas. Acceptance lists change, so treat this table as a starting point and confirm the current position with your university and the visa authority before you book.
Which English test does each student visa accept?
A university can admit you on a test that the visa authority does not recognise, so check the visa rule separately. Here is the general picture; the destination guides carry the detail.
- UK: for degree-level study and above, your university can assess your English itself, which is why some UK universities accept Duolingo or a medium of instruction letter. Below degree level you normally need a SELT from the Home Office's approved list, such as IELTS for UKVI; the approved tests can change, so check GOV.UK before booking. See the UK Student visa guide.
- Australia: you need results from an approved test taken at a test centre unless you are exempt, and fully online at-home tests are not accepted. That rules Duolingo out for the visa. See the Australia student visa guide.
- Canada: your school's admission requirement usually decides the test, and you include the result it relied on. The officer can still ask whether your English suits the course. See the Canada study permit guide.
- US: there is no single visa test. The school sets its English requirement and records your proficiency on the Form I-20, and the consular officer hears your English at the interview. See the US F-1 guide.
- Europe and Malaysia: rules vary by country and university. Malaysia's EMGS publishes the tests it accepts for the Student Pass, including IELTS and PTE Academic. See the Europe and Malaysia guides.
The official sources are GOV.UK's Student visa page for the UK and the Department of Home Affairs for Australia. When a university's rule and a visa's rule disagree, the stricter one decides which test you take.
How to choose the right test, step by step
- List your target universities and courses, and note each one's accepted tests and required scores.
- Check the visa rule for the same destination and course level; if it is narrower, it wins.
- Strike out any test that fails either list, then compare what is left.
- Think about your strengths: a nervous speaker may prefer recording into a microphone, while a slow typist may prefer IELTS on paper.
- Check that your result will still be valid on the day you apply, and plan backwards from your intake.
- Book through the official website only, and keep the confirmation email.
Leave room for a retake before your application deadline. Students who book one attempt in the last possible slot often end up deferring their intake.
Can you study abroad without IELTS?
Sometimes. Studying abroad without IELTS is possible in three common ways, each with conditions that differ between universities and visa routes.
A medium of instruction (MOI) letter
An MOI letter is a document from your university, usually issued by the registrar or the controller of examinations, confirming that your degree was taught and assessed in English. Some universities, particularly in the UK and parts of Europe, accept it, often only for recent degrees and certain courses. It does not satisfy a visa rule that demands a specific test, such as Australia's.
The university's own English assessment
Some UK universities interview applicants or set their own test, which the UK allows for degree-level study. Others offer a pre-sessional English course before the degree starts; ask how that affects your offer, your CAS and your visa before you rely on it.
Waivers based on school results
A strong grade in O level or A level English, or several years of English-medium schooling, sometimes leads to an English proficiency waiver. Policies differ widely and change often, so get any waiver confirmed in writing on your offer letter.
How to prepare for IELTS, PTE or Duolingo
Each test rewards a slightly different kind of preparation, so practise in the format you will actually sit.
IELTS
Practise writing by hand under time pressure if you are taking the paper test, and record yourself answering speaking questions to hear hesitations. Read the official band descriptors so you know what examiners reward, rather than relying on tricks from coaching groups.
PTE
Learn every item type thoroughly, because the format rewards familiarity. Practise speaking at a steady pace into a microphone, as long pauses and restarts cost marks, and get used to typing accurately on an unfamiliar keyboard.
Duolingo
Take the practice test on the official site and read the room rules carefully: a quiet, well-lit space, your face visible and no notes or other people nearby. Check your laptop's camera, microphone and internet connection well before test day, as load-shedding or a dropped connection can cost you the attempt.
Booking an English test in Pakistan
IELTS and PTE are available at test centres in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and several other cities, and seats fill quickly before the main intakes. Book through the official IELTS or Pearson PTE websites, or an official test partner, and pay only through the channels those sites list. The Duolingo English Test is booked and paid for on its own official website.
Use the same passport for the test that you will use for your visa application, so that the name and number on your result match your file. Check the test's ID rules in advance; where a passport is required, a CNIC is not a substitute.
Which test should Pakistani students take?
If you want one test that keeps the most doors open, IELTS Academic, or IELTS for UKVI when your UK course needs a SELT, is the safest choice. PTE Academic is a strong alternative for the UK, Australia and Canada if you prefer computer-based testing and your universities accept it. Duolingo makes sense mainly for US universities and some Canadian or UK ones, where both the university and the visa route accept it.
Students heading to Australia should rule out at-home tests from the start, and anyone considering the UK below degree level should go straight to a SELT. Frequently asked questions
Is Duolingo accepted for a UK student visa?
Not as a Secure English Language Test. For degree-level study, the UK lets universities assess English themselves, so some accept Duolingo for admission, and that can be enough for the visa. Below degree level you need a SELT from the Home Office's approved list, such as IELTS for UKVI. Check your university's position and GOV.UK before relying on Duolingo.
Is PTE easier than IELTS?
Neither is easier for everyone. PTE suits students who type quickly and stay calm speaking into a microphone, while IELTS suits those who prefer speaking to a person or writing by hand. Try a practice test in each format, then pick the one where you perform more consistently, as long as your university and visa both accept it.
Can I use IELTS General Training for a student visa?
Usually not. Universities expect IELTS Academic, while General Training is mainly used for migration and work routes. Where a UK visa needs a SELT, you take IELTS for UKVI, choosing the Academic version for university study. Booking the wrong module is a common and costly mistake, so check the exact test name on your offer letter first.
Do I need an English test if I studied in English in Pakistan?
Not always. Some universities accept a medium of instruction letter, O or A level English results or a degree taught in English, and some assess applicants themselves. But visa rules can be stricter than university rules; Australia, for example, expects an approved test taken at a test centre unless you meet an exemption. Confirm both before deciding.
Which English tests do Canadian universities accept?
Most Canadian universities and colleges accept IELTS Academic, and many also accept PTE Academic, TOEFL iBT or Duolingo. Each institution publishes its own list and minimum scores, and some programmes are stricter than the university's general rule. Choose a test your school lists for your programme, and include that result with your study permit application.
What happens if my test result is lower than required?
Some universities make a conditional offer and let you join a pre-sessional English course, while others ask you to retake the test. For the visa, a result below the required level, or from a test the route does not accept, can lead to refusal. Retaking early is usually cheaper and quicker than reapplying after a refusal.
